For those of you who are interested as to how
an adventure such as building a B&B begins - here is our story.
We purchased the property where Wildflowers Bed
& Breakfast now sits primarily as an investment. Thinking we would
put in the "services" hydro/septic etc. then resell somewhere in
the future. Purchasing the property on Darcy's birthday 1994 should
have been our first clue that this place was special. The more often
we visited the more the land appealed to us and we decided to build.
Drawing up the floor plans ourselves we started to build in January
1995 and moved into our new home on July 15th. We did a lot of the
work ourselves - painting, tiling, hardwood floors, etc. It was
a wonderful feeling to look around and see our own handy work.
Promising the use of the grounds to a cousin for
her wedding the following August prompted us to get the gardens
together. Although the grounds looked spectacular for the wedding,
we find ourselves revamping or adding new features each year.
We had thought about doing a B&B in the
main house so the design was such that there was 2 bedrooms and
a bathroom on the second floor. When we really started to research
what we liked in a B&B the most important thing is privacy!! So
this is how the Dream began.
In
February of 1999 we began to build. We used the same very good friend
builder/designer, that transformed our ideas into the house, to
help us with this project. It is one thing to have the vision in
our heads and another to portrait that vision to the builders. We
had collected the design ideas on our travels to Thailand and Indonesia.
We began to collect all the finishing articles as soon as we decided
to build.
We
used the wood that we cut down for the building site for the posts
on the covered decks, and the siding on the units. The doors themselves
came from a very old building in Vancouver that was being dismantled.
The Versatile Shipyards. The pine bathroom doors were a sub floor
that had been covered for many, many years so the wood was in great
condition. The entrance doors was the electricians workbench. It
is wonderful first growth timber that has had a long history, and
now, a new beginning.
As with the house we did a lot of the work
ourselves. All the main floor areas our tiled by us and we had "painting
parties" with friends for the interior walls. All the siding and
exterior finishing pieces were painted in our garage. We also cut
all the scalloped shingles that are decorating the exterior peaks
and hand painted them. With some minor set backs (couldn't let you
think that a project like this doesn't have a hitch or two!!!) we
opened August 21st 1999.
We love to travel, meet people, and
entertain so the B&B is a great way for us to do those things from
the comfort of our home. Our wish for our guests is that they feel
pampered and relaxed during their stay with us, and return time
and time again.
